An Open letter to Times Now

Dear Sir/ Madam,
Trust you are doing well. This is a viewer from Chennai.

Let me cut straight to the point. The News Hour show last night anchored by Arnab Goswami was one of the most disgusting sights ever on any news channel. This is a view shared by millions of people across the country. (If you do not wish to believe me, you may infer from the top trends on twitter, a body which your channel often relies on to create certain trends yourself.) Not that you are unaware of this.

Your channel often claims to "represent the people" and seeks accountability from every person/ body who must be accountable or responsible to the public.  As a leading news channel, are you not responsible to portray things in an objective manner? Decency is the least we expect from you.

Mr Arnab Goswami thinks he is the pillar of discipline and the epitome of all that is right. His methods of conducting the show have often been criticized. In many situations, he has put straightforward questions to the right people - all credits to him for that (despite my despise for the levels of noise on the show and his refusal to let people answer such relevant questions).

Surely you and your group would agree that, when it comes to cricket, he is not more knowledgeable than the legends of the game like Sourav, Rahul, Sachin, etc., ALL of whom have praised the Indian campaign in this world cup and that they have clearly punched above their weight.

We lost to a better team. HOW HARD IS IT to accept that fact? Disgrace is not expected from the highly learned people I'm sure your group employs.

Okay, criticize the team. Point out the errors committed on the field. Kohli played it a little late, Raina played a loose shot... you get the picture. But please explain to me HOW DOES MR ARNAB FEEL THAT HE HAS THE RIGHT TO QUESTION THE INTEGRITY AND COMMITMENT OF THE TEAM AND THE CAPTAIN? A guy who has deemed it fit to stay and represent his country on the foreign soil for months rather than go see his first newborn baby girl back home even for a day.  How would you feel if you sacrificed so much for the country and an egotistic person, who has negligible knowledge about a field you are a master in, sits in his air conditioned studio and starts blithering all over his show on national television to millions of people? Atrocious!

Arnab asked why was Ashwin not introduced earlier in innings - isn't that his OPINION? There is a reason Arnab isn't the captain of the Indian Cricket team, if at all that needed reminding. How can he expect HIS OPINION to be the same as that of others, more so, of the captain of the national team? Simply outrageous, Sir.

Oh, and I don't know if you heard - he said AB De Villiers cried , Dhoni did not, so he is not passionate. I don't know if I should laugh at that or get even more wild... please help me out here!

Your channel is using words like "disgrace" and "humiliation" to describe the campaign. How many times have India won 11 matches in a row in World Cups? Never before. Does not that tell you something? How many times have India bowled each opponent out for seven matches in a row? Never before. Does not THAT tell you something? Maybe... probably?

What angers me the most is the players and the team will watch/ hear such negative views and assume that the people feel this way - you represent the "Nation", right? I want to know which that Nation is. The same Nation that is SO PROUD of their cricket team, and made the hashtag "Shameontimesnow" trend last night?

There is a reason that top cricketers and legends of the game do not appear on your channel. Arnab likes to invite panelists on whom he can steamroll his very sacred opinions. He is a great talent, do not mistake. If there was an Olympic sport for shutting other people's mouth without letting them talk, and accusing them of not answering one's brilliant questions, India would have a Gold medal every single time through him. The medals can be found in your corporate office, pinned proudly onto the wall.

Here is a challenge to Mr. Arnab: make Sourav Ganguly, Ravi Shastri, Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar come on your show and SAY THE EXACT SAME THINGS HE SAID LAST NIGHT. See where things go then.

Sadly, I am only a common man. A part of the "Nation" your TV show supposedly represents. I would love to talk to Mr. Arnab about this and enlighten him. Probably even educate. If he would let me speak, of course.

I have taken a lot of time off my routine to write this mail to you,  with the pure intention that your journalism can get a little more responsible. Not much more, because, trust me, the negative image you have generated last night is not going to be forgotten easily. And that being said, Shame on Times Now.

People tell me that these sorts of things are said to increase TRP. I do not wish to believe that. If I did, I wouldn't be writing to you seeking an explanation.

I humbly request you to respond to this. You love asking for accountability. So let us now see if you practice what you preach.

Regards,
Arvind Ramamurti
Chennai

  3. It's strange.

South Africa stutters and loses out in semi-final and people go gaga on social media!

India puts up a clinical performance throughout the tournament and loses out in semi-final and people hate Team India now!

Well played guys, nothing to regret. Let the hosts to fight for the cup. Welcome back after a very long tour. Your daughter is waiting for you MSD. Great commitment.

Thank You Dhoni & Team for all the inspiring moments. It's just another game and nobody died.

  4. Dear Mr. Ramamurti,

Lovely Article. Well phrased and echoes a sentiment felt by a large number of 'common men'. I have hoped that someone would write on this issue with clarity and true purpose. A true delight!

While I laud the effort, I am led to believe that you have your CA final exams in May. We can take on Arnab and the world once this is accomplished. Or in the event that the results don't pan out as expected we can do so post November. or was it December? What say thee?

    Cheers

    1. Dear Mr. Vishal,

Truly humbled by your appreciation. Cant thank you enough for that.

Yes, you have been led to believe right.. I did not want to curb something which I wrote out of raw emotion. After a few months, this would not have turned out like this, I reckon!

I hope that "event" does not occur, and, needless to say, I'm doing everything I can to ensure it doesn't.

      Cheers, brother

  6. I am not for what Arnab Goswami did yesterday night.
He desiccated the total strength, effort, dedication and spirit of M.S. Dhoni and his men in his usual 'chorus in discord' show.
Sitting inside an air conditioned chamber and conducting lung buttering mad tantrums is one thing. Sweating it out for the sake of indian victory surrounded by half a lac of admirers and confronting equal number of gladiators is another thing.
The choices are only two for both the battalions. Kill or get killed.
Dissection to find out the cause for the loss is necessary but it has to be done by those who are appointed for it. Definitely not on a public platform.

  16. Mr.Arvind Ramamurthy, Where were your balls go when India were no place in Olympics. Why shout when India lose a Semi-final. Neither Arnad nor yourself has got the guts to talk about India losing Semi-Final. If you should support Indian team losing Cricket, what were you doing when India lost every single game in Olympics. Please understand Cricket is not a game as your fickle brain thinks. It is a business. But, Olympics is not. Thats why Indians keep on shining in Cricket and struggling to find a place in Olympics. Please return to whatever you were doing and refrain from commenting Arnab or F*****ing Cricket.

    3. My point is why shout when India loses in Cricket and finds no place in Olympics and in lot other things.

When the Subject Cricket itself is too much to discuss, why worry about Arnab and subsequently Arvind's protest and subsequently our discussion.

Its not my job to flunk is family or demean Arvind. Why the heck you drag personal things into this, when I have never brought in personal things against Arvind or Family. I am afraid that you have something personal against him. . Now people understand who the retard is.. Obviously it is Prem Kumar Krishnan.. LOL

I wish Arvind to shine in his CA Exams and wish him all the best to his career. If you guys would have noticed, I asked him to return back to what he was doing.

  29. Oh My dear friend, well articulated.... a media house like Times of India and Mr jain must be ashamed to have a person like Arnab... his behaviour in all the episodes of super prime time is deplorable and he assuming the role of saying" the people of the country would like to know..." is the act of an egoist in action and I guess he is no different from Arvind Kejriwal, Yadav and Bhushan of AAM admit party

  31. Sensible questions Arvind. I actually sometimes admire the way Arnab has his facts right and put his questions on the interviews. But this time I am not sure what Arnab had his mind to ask such questions to a person who has lead a perfect example to be a captain. Winning is definitely important but competing and fighting for something is even more important which, our team has definitely achieved. I am really proud of our team to have given an tough battle. Salute Team India..

  34. I really dont understand what the people commenting here are appluding Arvind for? If anyone of them including Arvind had indeed watched the the show , Arnab never criticized our defeat . What he said was the fighting spirit which should have emanated from the captain and inculcated right across the team was not there in that particular match . He said we should have gone down gloriously fighting like what SA did . Fight tooth and nail and go down and we applaud you is what he said. Any any on who watched the SA match and India semi final would have noticed this . I may or may not be a fan of Arnab, but I felt that the actual perspective of the argument has to be made clear.

    ReplyDelete
  35. everything is well said and justified but correlating a national team player for his responsibility with his personal life is not justified at all. Not going to meet his child is totally his personal decision, there is absolutely no connection between this with anything else.....simple. And rest all what you said and justified is just fact as well as amazing.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Mr Arvind!! I dont know what happened in that debate to evoke such a response from u!!.. Arnab never demeaned the Indian Team..He only said that India surrendered meekly without a fight and that's true..Face it,man...India played extremely well throughout the tournament, but all the wins they had( sans against SA) were against lower rated teams...ADid u read the article by Bishen Singh Bdei in the Hindu yesterday?? He said that Indian team never had to fight for the victories it had attained in it's league stages...Is it not true?? Now when they were up against a worthier opponent in the semi-final, they crumbled like a house of cards

Arnab never disrespected Dhoni&Co.. He said that Virat and Raina got out cheaply,, when their contributions could have taken India closer to the target. It is a FACT!!!..Only some one has to question MSD and u ppl woulld jump up and write blogs..It makes me SICK!!!..U are not the only enlightened soul in this country...so u can keep ur blogs to urself...This Indian team had the batting line-up to chase down 330..but they did not do it..

As for MSD's decision of staying in Australia and not going to see his new born baby, while I agree it's alll admirable and patriotic and all that..he could have still gone away for a week and come back.No one would have stopped Him..It was his personal decision not to go and see his baby...Dont bitch and moan as if it's a great personal sacrifice he has done for the team..

Mr Arvind.. Let me ask u one thing..I agree it's ur personal right to write blogs...But u did this only because it was MSD and team India being accused, right?? Did u write an OPEN LETTER to the IOC when Sarita was disgraced at the Asian Games?? Did u write a blog like this when Indian Hocckey team was wrongly accused in a doping controversy last year??..No, I bet u havent even heard of it...U are asking Ravi Shastri and Sourav Ganguly to come and speak...For ur information they said the very same thing that Arnab had pointed out in his debate that day...

While I may not be a fan of Arnab and his voluble debates, I did not feeel that he insulted MSD or any cricketeer in that debate that day...He only said what the whole country had been saying..that we went down without giving a fight..People like u are over-rating cricket and it's stars. They cannot perform all the time.We start creating memes and trollls when they lose..If India wins then we would troll the losing team..This is why Indians are seen as immature by the West....stop treating it like a personal insult whenever someone accuses a cricketeer..Or take it as a personal insult WHENEVER any Indian sportsperson is wrongly accused of a crime...I kindly request u to take down this blog..Its creating only flame wars between us

  38. Dear Arvind Sir,

Forget Arnab Goswami and the shame on times now.

I am sad to see that this country is ruled by majority of Mediocres like us who have happily settled for something so below ordinary cricket. We have always remained emotional ... Mother, Daughter, Cricket etc and remain blinded to truth. Have we ever tried to remain away from emotions and think what has went wrong or right.

A set of people representing a country meekly surrender. Meekly surrender might be subjective word. These men are supposed to train themselves for this match the whole 4 year, this being a cup of pride. Okay, we settle for the first 7 matches. On one hand we are happy they play sensational cricket and other hand we criticize their earnings from advertisements and all the means they distract themselves from serving their nation through this sport. I am not sure how many think so this is a way to serve a country. But when they are willing to forego an International tournament to represent country but make it a point to attend IPLs. Okay, thats personal. Lets not take about it.

It is also shameful that we take no responsibility or action when we all knew most of the matches are fixed. A game or sportsman whom we adore is part of it and we let him be as fans. Because there is a crowd or bunch of mediocres supporting him. Lets take Azharuddin and now he is in politics, we are glad to even vote for him.. It is emotional, personal and so let not talk about it too..

We are happy to settle with 7 (Miraculous should I say?) wins. Ok, being a good team we have won till semifinals, we have cheered and were praising them emotionally. Have we ever thought for a second to point out (Not criticize) what they must improve. They are our brothers and we are equally responsible to keep them responsible for their games. Cricket is not a professional sport for us whereas thats Australian's only job (profession). An army man represents that way and so must a cricketer. Our brothers are another army men. If they are not prepared for a fight, it is our shame and our responsibility to question...

When we come to know that all we cheered and poured our fake emotions (We are happy for the moment and cricket entertains us that way) ends up as a fixed match, we move on and wait for IPL.

The questions raised by Arnab was also emotional (why didn't he cry etc) and not the right questions to ask. Lets forget those jokers and I wish we young generation take a step back.. not be emotional and lets see our strengths and weakness, be responsible for our brothers who represent our country. Let us understand that representing a sport is also a patriotic way to show our love towards country. Let it not be ruled by Politics, money, gamble etc. We are responsible to straighten things. I think we must questions everyone's integrity without getting emotional in a proper way.

As my guru has always said..
    http://satbhavanandha.blogspot.in/2015/03/dangerous.html

Lets not be the mediocres who only blindly support emotionally but know when to criticize properly.

  39. Ramanaga, you didn't find Dhoni's 65 fighting enough? Should he be making gestures and shouting at the top of his voice, a la Goswami, to prove to the viewers that he is a fighter? Rubbish! Yes some matches are lost by a bigger margin than one would like. In the Final yesterday, NZ also lost by a big margin of 7 wickets. And Brendon's McCullum too, like Dhoni, is not a guy given to animated shouting / sledging in the field. Does it mean, he is not a fighter? Besides Times Now, some of the publications from the same group also seem to harbour ill will against Dhoni. Probably, they see him as Srinivasan's man. Some one who is in the opposite camp to their own ! It is their opinion and can take nothing away from the no-nonsense attitude of Dhoni.
But Arnab Goswami has treated the viewers like dirt; we viewers should give him back what he and his channel deserve. To start with let us all BOYCOTT TIMESNOW during the ENTIRE MONTH OF APRIL 2015. Let us hope the viewers' message gets across to the mandarins who manage the Channel.
